2 out of 5 stars Not a long term solution   June 20, 2010

So, it looks great while it works. A little over a year after purchasing it started showing artifacts on screen.
I'm pretty disappointed that a simple device like this can conk out after so little use.

1 out of 5 stars A huge step backwards from DVDs   June 17, 2010

I've used a lot of video players over the years and, since the fall of VHS, I've been most consistently satisfied with Sony's players.

Until now.

This player is SLOW. It takes 10-20 seconds just to eject the tray AFTER I've turned it on. Every action is glacial. Starting a video is slow. It makes a similar delay to eject a disk and/or shut off the unit.

"Special effects" like fast forward, slow, and pause are jerky and unreliable.

This player is INCOMPATIBLE with standard format DVDs. I have a widescreen TV and I can't get it to play standard DVDs without artificially widening the image to fit the screen. Aly McBeal isn't supposed to be so hefty.

Personally I can't see enough of an improvement in Blu-Ray to justify the cost and inconvenience, even with a low cost player like this one.

4 out of 5 stars great deal   June 5, 2010

This Blu-Ray was a good deal. Its design is sleek. The only issues I have it that it takes longer than regular DVDs to power up and start viewing. However, I think this is how all blu-rays are because my other one is the same. The quality of the picture is fine to me, but I'm not techie. If you're looking for a basic blu-ray to view HD, this one will do the trick

3 out of 5 stars Great functions but mediocre quality   March 1, 2010

To get right to the point, I knocked off 2 stars for a few reasons:

DISLIKES
1. The video quality (blu ray and upscaled dvds) is very digital looking, which is difficult to explain, but when there is a close up of someone the skin seems to be covered in a digital like film of sweat. I did not get this with other players but it is pretty annoying.
2. The time it takes to power on and/or eject a disc is fairly long (20 seconds give or take).
3. The remote does not have an eject button on it.

I was expecting more from a 100$+ Sony blu ray player.
LIKES
There are only a few things that I did like about this player, however will not "make" this one--in the make or break scheme of things.
1. I liked that the remote had a backlight so that you could push the "light" button (which is very faintly illuminated so that you can find the button that lights the others) to mask the controls in an orange backlit glow.
2. The menu, which is the opening screen, has an ingenious, modern type of functionality that is very easy to manage through. Also, each option under the sub menus is defined so that you do not have to rummage through a manual in order to elucidate on terms or uses.
3. Has integrated features with your TV (it did with mine) such as: when you turn on the unit, it automatically turns on the TV and switches to the channel that you have the player hooked up to. Moreover, if the TV is on and viewing cable channels, and you power on this player, it will automatically switch the the channel that occupies the player.
4. Has a small blue light when a blu ray disc is being played and an off white light when a DVD is being played.

Although I believe this player is superior in regards to functions and integration, I cannot recommend this because the quality leaves much to be desired as well as having a sluggish presentation.

2 out of 5 stars No Resume. Major disappointment.   February 28, 2010

Shocked and annoyed that this player doesn't resume play from where I left off. Very annoyed.
