OPPO BDP-83. WORTH EVERY PENNY March 7, 2010 J-R Soldano 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was an early adopter of Blu Ray, buying one of the first Sony models. While I loved the picture and sound quality, I found myself of late constantly upgrading the firmware to keep pace with more advanced releases. Plus, with two impatient children, I found the load times intolerable--sometimes upward of 10 minutes to fully load a disc. After reading several glowing professional and customer reviews of the Oppo, I decided to research it further. The price point had me a little nervous, but I finally relented and purchase the deck. And I must say, I couldn't be happier. Picture and sound quality is superb, the construction is solid and sleek, and the cosmetics fit my system well. The unit is vented and dissipates heat well, and most importantly...the LOAD TIMES ARE INCREDIBLE. Even with the most feature-laden discs, load times are typically under one minute. The larger internal memory is an improvement over my old Sony, as it stores more content and speeds up replaying of the same title. Additionally, this deck appears to be able to play any disc in my library without any firmware problems. The only CON is that some of the deck's features are unable to be controlled by my Harmony One universal remote. But most are set-and-forget features anyway.
Yes, it costs more than most Blu Ray players today, but in this case you truly get what you pay for. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Great Product, excellent picture quality and audio. Expensive
for what you get and lack's features which others have.

Obviously I am happy with this Blu-Ray player. The optical clarity, design, speed, audio, HDMI interface are all incredible. I am running this Oppo player thru a Denon AVR-2807 (7.1 Klipsch) and Sony Pearl VPL-VW50 projector and the movies and audio are staggering. I had an upconverting Denon DVD player before but now I can run at 1080P and I am astounded by the improvement with Blu-Ray movies as well as the upconverted DVD movies. Bravo Oppo!! I need to look at what else you produce for future purchases. Zero complaints...

Wow! This player is all it is cracked up to be. Originally, I wasn't going to spend this much on a new Blu Ray player. After a ton of research and review reading, I took the plunge. I decided it was an investment and worth spending the extra money. Worth every penny! The picture quality is stunning. The Anchor Bay chip does an incredible job upconverting DVDs. One reason I bought this is the Analogue Outs for the sound. I didn't see a need to replace my perfectly good Onkyo receiver, which has no HDMI inputs. Since the Oppo decodes DolbyTrue HD and DTS-HD internally, all I needed was the Analogue Outs. The sound for my system has never been better.
Some reviews I've read claim trouble playing some Blu Ray discs. I have yet to find this problem. Those people may have gotten a quirky player. If so, they should have no problem exchanging it with Oppo directly. I had to deal with their customer service and they were excellent. I also have seen reviews complaining about the lack of WiFi and movie streaming. Personally, I am glad Oppo focused more on the actual disc playing capabilities rather than the peripheral features. If I decide I want those features, I will pick up a Roku box.
Though it's never been a big deal to me with past HD/Blu Ray players, the load times for the Oppo ARE very fast. It is a nice feature, but not necessary for me. I think "slow" load times tend to be made into too much of a big deal.
It may be more than you would like to spend on a Blu Ray player, but it is an investment you won't regret.

Probably one of the currently very best DVD players out there. Excellent Blu-Ray performance, with equally good performance of non-Blu-Ray media.
