Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The BDP-80 is a full-featured universal Blu-ray Disc player that supports BD Profile 2.0 (BD-Live and BonusView), DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), HDCD, CD and other popular media formats such as AVCHD, MKV video files, digital photos and music. Sharing the same decoder and similarly optimized firmware as OPPO's award-winning BDP-83, the BDP-80 features fast disc load times, quick response to user operations, and robust audio and video controls. In contrast to the BDP-83, which utilizes an onboard VRS by Anchor Bay video processor, the BDP-80 design has been optimized for use as a digital audio/video transport, emphasizing the accuracy of its digital audio/video outputs. At the same time, the BDP-80 is versatile enough to be used as a stand-alone universal Blu-ray player, thanks to its full array of output connections and audio/video decoding capabilities.

5 out of 5 stars oppo bdp 80 - versatile rich featured quiet fast bluray player   July 20, 2010
delta
pro

superb picture and sound quality
versatile, plays all kinds of discs and media
lots of features like bass management etc.
no fan, so pretty quiet, except for very little drive noise
lots of inputs & outputs and volume control
works great so far

contra

speed is good "for bluray"
but menu, prev/rev/fwd/next and general operation lags some what
could/should be more fluently

no high expectations at the appearance at this price (personally i like it)
plastic front, slightly flimsy disc drawer

user freedoms/restrictions could be friendlier
sadly the player doesn't ignore "must view content" on the disc
once caught in a 90sec anti copy clip, there's no way out!
no fwd/next in (animated) menus
forced subtitles can't be deactivated
"operation blocked by disc"

no hard power switch
(~1/2W standby power consumption is acceptable)

5 out of 5 stars Oppo Bdp-80 Blu Ray Player   July 19, 2010

This is one blu ray player that lives up to its hype. It plays both conventional and blu ray discs flawlessly. The load time for blu ray discs is excellent. It also plays SACDS which is not available on many blu ray players. One interesting feature is the resume feature. I collect old movie serials from the 1930's and the 1940's. I watched chapter 3 the other day, took out the disc, and when I put the disc in a few days later, the oppo remembered where I left off and immediately started to play chapter 4. Quite impressive. All in all, an excellent machine and I highly recommend it.

This product is outstanding. The set up was effortless and the audio/video quailty is fantastic. I listen to a good deal of DTS and SACD audio titles and this unit handles the playback very well. It has been 60+ days now and I am still very satisfied with this device.

4 out of 5 stars Analog Out to my 5.1 Denon works great. Oppo Runs HOT   June 28, 2010

This Oppo-83 was so hot after watching a movie that I could barely keep my hand on it. Both top and bottom are very hot. Not sure why the perforated vents are on the bottom. Does not seem helpful in letting heat escape. I'm concerned that this could be a problem for longevity down the line but I'm not sure it's a problem at all.

I read one other review that said it ran cool even without a fan. Perhaps mine gets hot because it's decoding the Dolby TrueDB in the player and out analog connections rather than having a receiver do it via HDMI. Any comments on the heat would be highly appreciated.

I really like my [old] Denon receiver but it does not have an HDMI input so I could not use it with my Sony BX1 Bluray Player. Most Bluray Movies do not have the Dobly Digital 5.1 sound track and only come with the Dolby TrueHD and 2-Channel Dolby Surround. I was having to rent the DVDs, rather than BRs, and having the Sony BX1 upscale to my 65" Plasma only to get the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound too.

With the Oppo-80, I get to keep my Denon Receiver, move the Sony BX1 to the bedroom so my wife can watch BR movies there, and use the analog connections from the Oppo-80 to my 6 Channel Denon Receiver Inputs to get the best sound possible. It works great. I skip the Rear Surrounds since my Denon does not take 7.1. I used the Oppo setup menu for the rear surround speakers to say I had "none". Also used "DownMix to 5.1" in case the BR was really 7.1. With this setup, I was blown away with the sound from Avatar, the first Dolby True HD movie I have seen/heard at home.

I have yet to try the PAL DVDs that I have from a different "Region", which I believe should play fine.

Other comments:
Successfully downloaded New Firmware upon first boot via Ethernet RJ- 45 connection.
- Player Boots Fast.
- Basic included remote not the best, ergonomically.
- have not yet found an "Info" button to show how far along the movie is (like with the Sony)
